90 Day Protocol

The sentence

She said she needs space

The sentence is not a puzzle. It is a stop.

She said it at the sink with the tap still running. Or in the car after pickup, eyes on the road. Or by text after the kids were down, a blue bubble that does not explain itself. I need space.

Your body heard: I am leaving. You started a closing argument.

If you are thinking about suicide, or if any part of you feels like you will not make it through this, call or text 988 in the United States. This page can wait. 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You do not need a plan or a particular level of pain to use it.

The sentence is a stop

You will want to define it. How much space. How long. Does this mean we are done. Can we still talk. Can I still come to bed. You will want a flowchart so the night has a shape.

She did not hand you a flowchart. She handed you a stop. You do not win by decoding it in the kitchen.

Space can mean she cannot think with you in the room. It can mean she already decided and she is being polite. You do not get to know which tonight. Asking her to pick one is a second conversation she already said she cannot have.

I hear you. I am not going to push this tonight.

That is the whole line. Then you stop. The second sentence is please do not leave me alone with this, said in better clothes. We can work this out. Tell me what I did. Give me a chance. All of that is the same message. It turns a stop into a hearing.

If she is still in the other room

Quiet. Guest room or the couch you already own. Lights down. Door closed. You do not follow her down the hall with a list of improvements. You do not stand in a doorway so she has to step around you. You do not knock at 1 a.m. because you thought of a better way to say it.

If she goes quiet after the sentence, that is the space. Filling it with a novel is how you prove you did not hear her. The long text. The playlist. The paragraph about finally understanding. Put the phone in another room after a set hour. If you cannot trust the thumbs, give one man the job of holding you to that.

Write down what she actually said. The words. The time. Who was in the room. No speeches in the margin. Tomorrow you will remember a kinder version or a crueler one. The page will not.

If she asked you to leave

A night on a couch or in a hotel is a cool-off. Packing the dresser and changing the address is a move. Those are two different acts. Read Should I leave the house tonight before you turn space into a forwarding address.

Do not agree to a trial separation on a napkin because you want to look like a man who heard her. A handshake is not a plan. Sign nothing. Hire counsel in your jurisdiction before you sign, move, or agree to anything lasting. I will not invent the housing rule of your county.

If a packet is already on the table, that is a clock, not a conversation. Photograph every page, including the backs if there is ink there. Put the originals in a folder. Morning. She served papers tonight is the page for the packet. This page is the sentence before the packet, or instead of it.

The kids

They do not need a briefing on their mother needing space. They need a bedtime if it is that hour. Food if it is that hour. You do not draft them into a witness stand so you can have a face that still loves you.

If they ask what is going on, a short true line. We are having a hard night. You are safe. Then the clock you already use. A speech about the marriage is a speech they cannot carry. If you have them this weekend, the first weekend with the kids is logistics, not a campaign to be the fun house.

The body, because the sentence will wait

Eat protein even if you are not hungry. Drink water. If you train, train once. If you do not, walk fast for an hour. Be in bed at a set time even if sleep will not come. If it will not, get up, write down everything screaming in your head, and go back.

Zero alcohol tonight. Not one beer to take the edge off. Alcohol lands on a nervous system already in crisis and is how the catastrophic text gets sent, or the drive, or the 1 a.m. case at her door. Food, water, sweat, bed. It is not a wellness program. It is how you keep the night from writing checks the week has to cash.

One man. Not a theory.

Not the family thread. Not the group chat. Not a post about taking space of your own so she might see it. Pick one man you trust. Facts. She said she needs space. Then the job, in words. Do not let me do anything stupid for three days. Do not let me text her a novel. Do not let me show up. Do not let me sign anything. Do not let me drink and then drive.

If you do not have that man, you still have 988, and you still have a lawyer's intake line in the morning. You do not have to earn the right to use either one. A forum of men rating space tactics is a group chat with worse lighting. Tell one man is the longer version of this job.

The fear

You are afraid that if you stop talking, she will finish leaving in the quiet. Say that to the one man. Not to her. The fear is real. The text does not fix it. The text just proves you cannot bear a night without a reply.

Some women use space and come back to a conversation. Some use space and finish leaving. You do not get to rent the outcome by performing stillness. Her return, if it happens, is a byproduct of two adults and a lot of time. It is not a prize you earn by going quiet the correct number of days.

The internet sold you a product for this sentence. Thirty days of silence. A gym photo. A version of you she will miss. Distance, if you use it, is logistics: kids, money, the lawyer. It is not a vanishing act. The no-contact rule for married men is the page for that, after tonight. Tonight you do not run a campaign. Tonight you hear a stop and you do not argue it into a hearing.

In the morning

You will wake up and for two or three seconds you will not remember. Then you will. Feet on the floor. Water. Food you do not want. If you feel strangely fine, do not trust it. Shock impersonates coping. The sentence is still real.

If she is still in the house, you still do not reopen the case at breakfast. If she is gone, you are in a first night. The First 24 Hours is the page you run. Say almost nothing. Sign nothing. No permanent housing move without counsel. Tell one man. No alcohol. If the night is worse than confusion, 988 first. You can get the PDF on the phone. Separation Survival Guide is the field manual for the split after this night. It does not promise she comes home.

Next step

Hear the stop. Then run the night.

The closing argument is still in your throat. Put it down. Open the First 24 Hours and run it. If you already want the 90 days on a calendar, that door is open.
