90 Day Protocol

First two days

Three mistakes in the first forty-eight hours

The first two days are when you try to finish a marriage in one conversation. That is the mistake.

She said she needs space, or she wants a divorce, or she is already gone. You have been a husband for years. You have been this man for about forty minutes.

Your brain wants a finish. A yes. A plan. A sentence that puts the house back the way it was at breakfast. That is not courage. That is a nervous system trying to end the feeling.

If you are thinking about suicide, or if any part of you feels like you will not make it through this, call or text 988 in the United States. This page can wait. 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You do not need a plan or a particular level of pain to use it.

I am not going to tell you these three moves guarantee a divorce. I do not run a scoreboard. I can tell you they make the next six months harder, and they are the moves almost every man reaches for because they feel like love.

You beg

It comes out as crying in the driveway. Please do not do this. I cannot live without you. I will do anything. You think you are showing her the size of the marriage. She is looking at a man who just handed her his entire spine and asked her to carry it.

I am not sneering at grief. Grief is going to arrive whether you invite it or not. You do not owe her a performance of steel. You also do not get to put the weight of your survival on her chest and call it honesty.

Process it where it belongs. One trusted man. A clinician if you have one. 988 if you need a human tonight and you do not have either. When you speak to her, if you must, keep it short.

I hear you. I am not going to respond to this tonight. We will talk when I have had time to think.

That is not a power move. That is a man who knows his judgment is impaired and refuses to negotiate the rest of his life on the clock of a panic.

You make a grand gesture

Flowers on the hood. A letter that took you four hours and two whiskeys. Suddenly doing the dishes like the sink was the marriage. A reservation. A ring you cannot afford. I will change, I swear, as if the problem were a lack of vows.

If the thing could have been fixed by a gesture, she would have told you what to buy months ago. The gesture is not romance now. It is a man trying to skip the part where he sits in a quiet room and does not get a reply.

Where was this energy in March. She will think that. You would think it too, if the positions were reversed. You cannot make up a year of absence with a Friday night that photographs well.

Stop the pursuit. You have real work that is not a performance: sleep, food, the lawyer in the morning, the one friend, the house you do not abandon without advice. The flowers can wait until there is a marriage to put them in.

You negotiate the rest of your life before Monday

Let's go to counseling, said like a closing. Give me thirty days. Think about the kids. We took vows. You start dividing weekends on a napkin. You agree to move out because she looks exhausted and you want to be the reasonable one. You shake on splitting it down the middle because fairness sounds like character.

She did not arrive at this sentence in one afternoon. You will not talk her out of it in one afternoon. And some of what you are offering, the house, the schedule, the money, is not a conversation. It is the kind of thing that follows you.

This is not legal advice. I will not invent the doctrine of your county. I will say what the First 24 Hours says, because it is the only honest first move. Say almost nothing. Sign nothing. Do not make a permanent housing move without counsel. Tell one man. No alcohol.

Counseling may be right later. A schedule will exist later. None of that is a first-night problem. Accepting that she said what she said is not the same as signing the rest of your life away so the feeling will stop.

What you do instead

You stay alive. That is not a metaphor. If the night is worse than confusion, you treat it like an emergency and you use the number at the top of this page.

You write down what happened in plain facts while it is still in the room. What was said. When. Who was there. No speeches in the margin.

You book a consult with a family law attorney this week, not because you have decided to fight, but because you need the actual terrain before you move on it. You eat something with protein. You drink water. You put your body in a bed at a set time even if sleep will not come.

You tell one man: do not let me do anything stupid for three days. Not the group chat. Not her mother. Not a post.

Her return is not the objective of the next forty-eight hours. There is no objective except not setting fire to the next six months. If you came here to maximize winning her back, you came to the wrong shop.

Do not beg. Do not buy the moment. Do not negotiate the decade before you have slept. That is the work. It is smaller than you wanted. It is the only size that fits tonight.

Next step

Forty-eight hours is not a decade

The driveway speech is still in your throat. Put it down. Use the First 24 Hours. If the night is worse than confusion, 988 is still the number at the top of this page.
