90 Day Protocol

First night

Tonight is not the night you solve the marriage

You want a plan that puts the house back together by morning. Tonight has a smaller job.

You came home and the closet was half empty. Or someone put an envelope in your hand in a parking lot and drove away. Or she said it at the table and the kids were in the other room and the food went cold.

You are standing in a house that still looks like yours. Your body does not believe that. Heart rate up. Sleep gone. The part of you that weighs a year against a minute is offline.

If you are thinking about suicide, or if any part of you feels like you will not make it through this, call or text 988 in the United States. This page can wait. 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You do not need a plan or a particular level of pain to use it.

Every urgent idea you have right now is being generated by a brain that thinks it is being attacked. The long text. The speech in the car. The grand gesture. The counterstrike. The sudden need to settle the house, the kids, the money, and the meaning of the last decade before midnight.

That mode is useful for thirty seconds. It is a disaster for the next thirty days.

The only job

You do not make a single permanent decision while your body thinks it is being attacked. Not about the house. Not about the kids. Not about money. Not about the marriage.

I know that feels like doing nothing. Doing nothing permanent is a decision. It is the decision that keeps tomorrow available.

Say almost nothing

If she told you face to face, your line is short.

I hear you. I am not going to respond to this tonight. We will talk when I have had time to think.

You are not agreeing. You are not counterattacking. You are declining to negotiate the rest of your life while your judgment is shot. If papers were served, you acknowledge nothing substantive to anyone until you have spoken with a lawyer. Do not send the novel. Do not call her mother. Do not post. Do not draft the kids into the story so you can have a witness who still loves you.

The long text will feel like honesty. It will read like a man who has not slept, asking a woman to save him from the night she just handed him.

Sign nothing. Agree to nothing.

Not a proposed schedule for the kids. Not who stays in the house. Not a handshake that you will just split everything down the middle because you want to be decent and you want the feeling to stop.

Informal agreements made in the first days have a way of becoming the floor for everything that follows. You are in no condition to know what you are giving away. This is not me playing lawyer. I am telling you not to invent a contract at the kitchen table at 1 a.m.

I am not agreeing to anything yet. I need time and I need advice.

Repeat it. It is sane. It is not a declaration of war.

The house

If you need to leave tonight to keep the peace, leave for the night. A friend's couch. A hotel. A parked car for an hour if that is what it takes to stop talking. Leaving for an evening is not the same as moving out.

Packing your life and setting it up somewhere else can carry consequences for custody and for the house. Those consequences vary by state and by situation. I will not invent a rule for your county. Cool off anywhere you like. Do not relocate your life tonight, and do not let anyone rush you into it before you have legal advice.

One man. No audience.

Not the family thread. Not the group chat. Not a story on the internet that will outlive the week. Pick one man you trust. Tell him what happened. Give him one job: do not let me do anything stupid for three days.

You need a handbrake, not a crowd. Once information is out, you cannot pull it back. If you do not have that man, you still have 988, and you still have a lawyer's intake line in the morning. You do not have to earn the right to use either one.

The body

Eat protein even if you are not hungry. Drink water. If you train, train once. If you do not, walk fast for an hour. Be in bed at a set time even if sleep will not come. If it will not, get up, write down everything screaming in your head, and go back.

Zero alcohol tonight. Not one beer to take the edge off. Alcohol lands on a nervous system already in crisis and is how the catastrophic text gets sent. Do not drive if you are wrecked. Food, water, sweat, bed. Run it even if it feels pointless. It is not a wellness program. It is how you keep the night from writing checks the week has to cash.

What you are not deciding

You are not deciding whether this marriage survives. You are not diagnosing the last five years. You are not managing what she thinks. You are not telling the children in a panic. You are not retaining a war team. This page is free orientation. It is not a substitute for counsel.

In the morning you will wake up and for two or three seconds you will not remember. Then you will. Feet on the floor. Water. Food you do not want. Book the consult this week. Write down what happened in factual language. If you feel strangely fine, do not trust it. Shock impersonates coping.

The First 24 Hours is the page you reread when the urge to finish everything tonight comes back, and it will. Tonight you have one job. Do nothing permanent.

Next step

Tonight still has one job

The closet is still half empty. You have not solved the marriage. Open the First 24 Hours and run it. If the night is worse than confusion, call or text 988 first.
