90 Day Protocol

Housing

Should I leave the house tonight

She told you to leave the house tonight. A night on a couch is a cool-off. Changing the address is a move.

She said it in the kitchen with the tap still running. Or from the top of the stairs. Or through a door she would not open. Get out. Tonight. There is a bag on the step, or she is packing one while you stand there with the house keys still in your hand.

You are still inside. Your name is on the mail. The part of you that wants to look decent is already reaching for the door. The other part wants to plant itself in the hallway so she has to look at what she just did. Both of those are the night talking.

If you are thinking about suicide, or if any part of you feels like you will not make it through this, call or text 988 in the United States. This page can wait. 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You do not need a plan or a particular level of pain to use it.

Two different acts

A night on a couch or in a hotel is a cool-off. You sleep somewhere else so your mouth stays shut. You keep the keys to the house you still live in. You come back in the morning unless counsel says otherwise.

Changing the address, packing the dresser, forwarding the mail, telling the school, emptying the joint account: that is a move. Those acts travel. A later room will ask where you lived after the night she told you to go. Being decent can become a forwarding address before you have spoken to anyone who can tell you what the night actually costs.

I will not invent occupancy law for your county. Hire counsel in your jurisdiction before you sign, move, or agree to anything lasting.

If the house is a crime scene in your head

If you stay in this state, you will talk. Talking writes the novel. The 1 a.m. case. The hallway patrol. The speech that starts as I just need you to understand and ends as a paragraph a lawyer will have to unwind.

Cool off so you do not talk. A friend's couch. A hotel. An hour in a parked car if that is what it takes to get your mouth shut. Come back in the morning unless counsel says otherwise.

You are buying silence. You are not relocating your life from a parking lot. You do not call her from the lot to narrate a noble exit.

If you stay

Quiet. Guest room, or the couch you already own. Lights down. Door closed. No 1 a.m. case. No hallway patrol. No standing in a doorway so she has to step around you. Eat if there is food. Water. Bed at a set hour even if sleep will not come. Zero alcohol. One beer is how the case starts.

The bag on the step

The packed bag on the step is a prop, not a lease. It is a scene the night is staging. Do not wrestle it in front of a child. Do not film. Do not shove. Hands to yourself. Voice short.

I hear you. I am not going to decide the house tonight. I need time and I need advice.

You are declining to settle occupancy while your judgment is shot. If you already said something at the door, stop. Do not add a second speech to clean up the first. If the bag is yours and you are cooling off, pick it up without a show. If the bag is a dare, leave it where it is.

The kids

Bedtime and food. They do not need a briefing on occupancy. They need a clock they already know.

Do not walk out "for them" so they watch a parent disappear. Do not plant yourself as a statue of the wronged man in the hallway they have to pass to get water. Both of those put a child in a seat they did not ask for.

If they ask where you are going, a short true line. I am going to sleep somewhere else tonight. I will see you in the morning. Then go, or stay, without a speech attached.

If a packet is already on the table

Photograph every page, including the backs if there is ink there. Put the originals in a folder. Morning.

Do not invent a better order at the table. Proposed orders in a clip are still proposed. Your signature at 10 p.m. is how a decent man gives away a month he has not slept through yet.

I am not agreeing to anything yet. I need time and I need advice.

What you take for a cool-off

Wallet. Phone. Charger. Meds. A change of clothes. The packet if there is one. Keys to the house you still live in.

The TV stays. The furniture stays. You do not change a lock from a parking lot. You do not empty a joint account because the hallway felt like a verdict. You do not forward mail at 11 p.m. from a hotel lobby because you want the feeling to stop.

A cool-off bag is a night. A U-Haul is a move. Keep them separate with your hands.

Write the night down

Who said leave. When. Who was in the room. What you took. Where you slept. What you said. What you did not say.

No speeches in the margin. Facts a lawyer can use in the morning. If you drank, write that down too.

One man. Then morning.

Pick one man you trust. Facts. She told me to leave the house. Then the job, in words. Do not let me do anything stupid for three days. Do not let me text her a novel. Do not let me sign, post, change an address, or drink and then drive.

One man. The group chat will outlive the week. Once information is out, you cannot pull it back. If you do not have that man, you still have 988, and you still have a lawyer's intake line in the morning.

In the morning you will wake up and for two or three seconds you will not remember. Then you will. Feet on the floor. Water. Food you do not want. Intake. Bring the folder. Tell the truth about the bag and the doorway. A lawyer can work with a fact. A lawyer cannot work with the version of you that left to look noble, or the version that planted himself in the hallway as proof.

The First 24 Hours is the page you run tonight. Say almost nothing. Sign nothing. Cool off if you need to. Keep the move for counsel. Tell one man. If the night is worse than confusion, 988 first. You can get the PDF on the phone. Separation Survival Guide is the field manual for the split after this night. Tonight is housing. Tonight is a doorway and a man who can still turn a cool-off into a forwarding address.

Next step

The house can wait until morning

A night on a couch is a cool-off. Open the First 24 Hours and run it. If the night is worse than confusion, call or text 988 first.
